How to get rid of ants in your kitchen

There’s nothing worse than seeing a trail of ants making its way across the kitchen bench. Ants are after one of two things from your kitchen: food or water. You get rid of ants from your kitchen by getting rid of these sources. (And then keeping them out).

Ants, kitchens, and food

4. Seeds: If you’ve watched the movie Antz, you might remember them eating and storing seeds. Some ants do prefer seeds and that means keeping the budgie’s seed secure and tidying up after making that whole-grain sandwich.
5. Fungus: ants have been known to grow their own fungus as a food source. So while they might not attack the mushrooms, they may decided that the mouldy fruit in the bowl or kids’ school bag is fair game.

The best thing you can do is to keep your kitchen tidy, keep open packets in sealed containers, and wipe up any spills.
Your pets will also appreciate you tidying up and tin or fresh food they’ve left so that the ants don’t bother them. Some owners will place pet bowls in a shallow tray of water to deter ants but allow pets to snack.

Ants, kitchens, and water

Ants really aren’t fussy eaters. In reality they are the ones that clean up what is left behind. Like us, different ants have different food preferences. Here are the main ones and what you can do for each.
  1. Sugar: Anything high in sugar tends to attract ants, and they love scoping out things like jelly, syrup, honey, lollies, chocolate, and juices. So make sure you clean up that watermelon juice on the counter or sugar you spilt on the floor.
  2. Fats: While you’re most likely to see ants crawling all over hot chips or bits of batter crumbs, they will also get into the dripping trays of barbecues or get into a piece of fat that missed the bin.
  3. Protein: Once again, they’re not fussy and will get their protein from pet food, off of a chop bone, from peanut butter, or even that dead mouse or bird that’s been lying around waiting to be disposed of.
Especially in Summer, it’s common to find ants coming inside to find water. You will tend to find them where water is pooling but within easy access. This could be around the base of a leaking tap, or at the end of its spout when it’s not turned off properly. Perhaps the ants are combining a drink and some food in that coffee cup or juice cup that’s been left half-finished next to the sink.

Some of the things you can do is to fix leaking taps or pipes, rinse and drain cups after use, and tidy any spills.

Keeping ants out of your kitchen

While some people may recommend wiping down counters with vinegar, using baits or ant sands, prevention is always the best cure.

The best prevention is to keep your kitchen clean and clear of any food and water that attract ants.

The next best prevention is to keep ants from entering your kitchen. This can be done by blocking up any gaps or holes and ensuring that you have a regular general pest spray to keep ants from entering your home. You can book your general pest spray online or you can call our team to book now.
