Wasp Nest Control in Adelaide: Identifying, Treating & Safely Removing Nests

11/25/2025

Finding wasps buzzing around your home or garden can quickly turn a relaxing day outside into a stressful one. Wasps in Adelaide often build their nests close to where we gather—near outdoor furniture, play areas, sheds, or rooflines. Their defensive nature and painful sting make them a genuine risk for families and pets, especially when a nest is disturbed.
At MD Pest Control, we take a targeted and safe approach to wasp control. Our focus is always on protecting your home first by eliminating the wasps themselves before any nest removal is attempted. This ensures the job is done safely, effectively, and with the least risk to you, your family, and your pets.
Below is an overview of the three types of wasps most commonly found in Adelaide—and how we manage each one.

1. European Wasps

European wasps are the most aggressive species we encounter and the one most likely to establish nests in hidden or inconvenient areas. These nests can be underground, inside retaining walls, in wall cavities, or around structures. Their numbers can grow rapidly, and the colony will defend the nest without hesitation.
Because of their behaviour and colony size, MD Pest Control uses treatments such as baits, dusting, and targeted sprays to eliminate the active wasps first. Only after activity drops and the colony is neutralised is the nest safe to remove. Attempting removal too early can provoke hundreds of wasps at once—something we never risk for client safety.
Also check with your local council to see if they offer European Wasp removal.

2. Australian Paper Wasps

Australian Paper Wasps, pictured on this page, tend to build the small, open “umbrella-style” nests you might see under eaves, pergolas, fence rails, or outdoor furniture. While they are less aggressive than European wasps, they will still defend their nest, and their stings can be extremely painful.
Their nests are often easy to spot, but removing them without controlling the colony first is dangerous. We apply fast-acting treatments designed to knock down the wasps around and on the nest, making it safe to detach and dispose of afterward. This ensures a complete solution—no survivors, no returning wasps, and no risk of re-establishing the nest.

3. Mud Wasps (Mud Daubers)

Mud wasps are solitary and create small, mud-based nests on walls, sheds, ceilings, or under outdoor structures. While they’re not as aggressive as social wasps, their nests can accumulate and make surfaces unsightly. Even solitary species can sting if provoked.
Because their behaviour is different from colony-forming species, MD Pest Control tailors treatment accordingly. We use light dusting or low-impact spray treatments to ensure any active wasps are neutralised. Only once the wasp is inactive is the mud nest safely removed and cleaned away.

Why Nest Removal Isn’t the First Step

Removing an active nest—of any species—can trigger defensive behaviour and put people at risk. That’s why MD Pest Control always controls the wasps before touching the nest. This approach ensures:
✔ Reduced risk of stings
✔ Higher success rates
✔ No returning workers
✔ Complete, long-term eradication
We use only the most effective treatment options available and prioritise products that are safe for families, pets, and the environment.
Most wasp treatments start from around $150, with pricing depending on nest size and location.

How to Discourage Wasps From Your Adelaide Property

You can reduce the chances of wasps settling in by making your yard less appealing:
• Remove fallen fruit and food scraps
• Keep pet food indoors
• Make sure bins have tight-fitting lids
• Keep swimming pools covered when not in use
• Cover food during BBQs and outdoor meals
• Drink from clear cups or use a straw instead of cans
For stings or reactions, always contact a doctor or the Poisons Information Centre on 13 11 26.

Not Sure What You’re Dealing With? We’re Happy to Take a Look.

Wasp nests can be hard to spot, especially if they’re hidden in roof spaces or underground. If you’re unsure about what type of wasp you’re seeing—or how serious the issue is--MD Pest Control offers free advice and can inspect your property to provide tailored treatment options.
Wasp problems don’t fix themselves. If you’re noticing increased activity around your home, get in touch and let MD Pest Control handle it quickly and safely. Online bookings are now available.
