Pest inspections in Adelaide

Did you know that one in five homes are damaged by termites in Australia? Did you know that termite damage isn’t covered by your home insurance? This poses a great risk for your home. It really is a case of buyer beware. It's also why a pest inspection is so important when buying a home here in Adelaide.

The average cost of repairing termite damage is $10,000 but can be a lot more – and that’s NOT including the cost of the termite treatment. (Source: Pacific International Insurance Ltd – the pest industry insurers).

Do you know what to look for? Can you climb into tight spaces and find possible weaknesses and flaws? Do you know about pests like termites? Do you know the massive damage they can cause?

Unless you know what you’re looking for and adequately insured, then skipping a pre-purchase pest inspection can see you risking your largest and most valuable asset. Compare that with the relatively small cost of a pre-purchase pest inspection and that pest inspection becomes an investment.

As the experts in termite treatment and control, our fully trained technicians can conduct a comprehensive termite inspection of your home and property. We can discuss with you the cost of treating any pests found. Where necessary, we will deliver the best termite control solutions to protect your home.
Our termite and pest inspections are rigorous and start outside the building looking for any damage/workings from termites along with checking conducive condition. We then continue inside the building checking for signs of excessive moisture which can be an attractant for termites. Inspectors will carry out moisture testing along with checking for any prior treatments.

As termites are around 70% water, high moisture readings in supposedly dry surfaces like wooden door frames are a good indicator that termites might be present.  As soon as we get an indication of termites we will investigate further to determine the extent of any damage.

Want to be present during the inspection? Sure! Feel free to watch your Inspector in action. At the end of the inspection – at your request – your Inspector will be very happy to walk you through the report.

Our pre-purchase pest inspections:
  • Meet Australian Standards
  • Carried out by fully qualified technicians
  • Include comprehensive reporting

Wasps in Adelaide

As the weather warms and we start to spend more time outside, we tend to see more wasps in Adelaide. So we thought it was a good time to share a little information with you to help when you find wasps in your yard.

What type of wasps are in Adelaide?

We deal with three main types of Wasps.
1) The European Wasp
2) The Australian Paper Wasp and
3) The Mud Wasp.
Of all three, it’s the European wasp that causes the most problems for Adelaide home owners.

European Wasps

It can be hard to tell the difference between a European wasp and a bee when they’re buzzing around your bbq. There are a few tell tale signs to watch out for so you know it’s a wasp:
- thin yellow legs
- mostly yellow abdomens
- triangular black markings

Wasps will travel up to 500m to find food or water. European wasps are also rather lazy hive makers and will build them in trees, under ledges, or underground. This can make finding and treating the hive quite difficult. (but not impossible) What you will notice when you near a nest is that there will be more activity. Take a photo of where you believe the nest is, it could be a hole in the ground or a grey paper-mache looking mound in a tree or under a ledge.

Tips to DISCOURAGE European Wasps from your property:
  • DO NOT leave fallen fruit or food scraps lying around your yard
  • AVOID leaving uneaten pet food or dog bones outside
  • Make sure rubbish bins have tight fitting lids
  • Keep your swimming pool COVERED when not in use
  • Cover exposed food at picnics and BBQs
  • DON'T drink out of cans or bottles, use clear containers or a straw

It’s not a European Wasp so what is it?

Here in Adelaide, it’s most likely that if it’s not a European wasp that it’s either an Australian Paper or Mud Wasp. Here are a couple of tips to help you tell the difference.

Paper wasps have rust coloured abdomen, eat caterpillars and other insects, and will only sting if their nest is disturbed.

Mud wasps are solitary, eat spiders and other insects, and their abdomen sits at the end of a thin yellow protuberance from the thorax.

If you are doing all you can to deter wasps from your Adelaide home then it’s time to give MD Pest Control a call. I have options for Wasp Control that range from baits; dusting and some sprays - call and ask or book online now.
