Are pest control services worth it?

10/21/2021

Your home is generally the most expensive thing that you own, and your family and their welfare the most precious thing in it. But are pest control services worth the cost of protecting them?

While there are many products available for the home handyperson to use, there are some considerations.

Insurance and pest control

Firstly, home insurers don’t cover the cost of repairing damage done to your home by pests. Home insurers may not cover by the damage done by DIY pest control treatment. Professional, licensed pest controllers carry their own insurance for any injury or damage done while providing a pest control treatment.

Risk to your family

You know that you want to keep your family safe and you’re a handy type of person. You wonder if all the hype around getting a professional pest controller in is actually worth the cost. Especially when money is tight.

If we ignore the risks of falling off ladders, crashing through ceilings or walls, damaging footings, all the normal DIY fails you see online – things can still go wrong. Unless you have industry knowledge and experience all you’re really doing is trial and error and taking a stab in the dark that something you bought off the shelf might work.

So with all the nasties you know that pests carry, why would you use trial and error to fix a problem?

Chemical risks and DIY pest treatments

Picture
The chemicals a licensed pest controller uses are targeted, tested, and highly efficient and effective. We also ensure that you, your family, your pets, and your home are safe while we treat for pests. We protect ourselves with industry standard PPE safety equipment. Unfortunately, over the counter treatments can’t guarantee these things.

Then there’s the risk that you might decide to follow some online recipe. This can be incredibly dangerous. All of our chemicals are premixed. We also know which chemicals can be used together, and which to avoid.

Costs

When trying to compare a shop bought and industrial treatment, you need to consider the cost of the various shop treatments you’d need to buy to do all that a professional one does. Then when you think of the number of applications you need to do to our one treatment. Then the cost of your time running around to buy and do it. Then the cost of learning how to do it or fixing mistakes. It adds up.

We also understand that funds can get tight and that’s why we have Jim Pay Plan powered by OpenPay so that you can split your payments into affordable instalments. This helps make cost not so much of an option.

Experience

It’s hard to put a value on experience. Knowing the best places to spray. Where the bait should go. Where pets and pests will meet. How to tell if there’s termite activity. Where there’s termite damage and if they’re still active. All of these things are a benefit to a homeowner who chooses to trust a professional pest controller over DIY.

Peace of Mind

What is knowing that your home and family are properly protected against pests actually worth? What is your time worth? What is knowing that you don’t actually have to do a job on that long list worth?

Peace of mind is priceless.

So when you’re trying to work out if getting a professional pest controller in is actually worth it, look past the cost of the insecticide and think about the things we’ve listed here. Your home, family, and self are worth taking care of professionally.

Which insects are controlled by a general pest control spray?

General pest spray is a type of an insecticide that is commonly used in eliminating general pests known as crawlies and creepies. Such common household pests include ants, spiders, moths, cockroaches, carpet beetles, flies and fleas.

Please note that the General Pest Service is not for termite, rodent or severe infestation (these will require specific treatments) but is highly effective for the treatment of mild to medium pest levels: especially when reapplied annually.

General pest sprays are focused on the walls (internal and external), vents, cornices/eaves, and other areas where pests often live, hide, or gain entry to your home. You will get the inside/outside of your home sprayed, a light mist put on the ceiling - this will help with fly control, the roof void dusted and the sheds and fences sprayed.

The most common pests we treat with the general pest spray are ants, flies, spiders and cockroaches. We find that Spring seems to be a time where our clients see more activity from these pests and will book in for their general pest control spray. (It’s why we encourage having a regular annual booking with us).

You may see an increased number of insects after you have your general pest spray. It’s ok. It means it’s working.

The spray is flushing the insects out of their hiding places. Don’t use any other surface sprays. The bugs will be moving over the pest control spray, taking it back to their nests, walking it over webs, and helping to eliminate more pests inside and around your home.

At MD Pest Control we tailor every job to your personal specifications and there are no hidden costs. That means that if you have a particular issue with a shed or in the garage, we can focus there. If a particular insect is giving your grief, we can tailor our treatment to them.

Please note that while our general pest spray is not toxic to humans or pets, we recommend that you avoid sprayed areas until they are dry.
