Four Steps to Mosquito Control this Summer

10/17/2022

Mosquitoes are among the most annoying insects to have around and we have to deal with them every summer. In this blog, I'll be talking about the four steps you need to take to deal with mosquitoes this summer.

Tips to protect your family from mosquitoes.

Mosquitoes are not only a nuisance but a health hazard. They can transmit Ross River virus, Barmah Forest virus and Japanese Encephalitis virus among others. There are also a number of other mosquito-borne diseases that are serious and may be fatal like Murray Valley encephalitis, Kunjin virus and dengue fever. The best way to protect your family from mosquitoes is to avoid being bitten. Here are some tips for you to do just that:
- use mosquito repellents containing either DEET, Picaridin, or Oil of Lemon Eucalyptus (PMD), that have been approved by the Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority.
- cover your skin with light, loose, and long clothing to prevent mosquitoes from being able to bite
- use mosquito-proof mesh on doors and windows so mosquitoes can’t come inside
- mosquito coils or incense sticks and electric zappers can help protect from mosquitoes when outside.

There are a few things you can do to avoid mosquitoes and other pests this summer.  One of the best ways to prevent mosquitoes is to keep the area around your home free of standing water. This includes things like buckets, flower pots, and discarded tires. Mosquitoes lay their eggs in water and the larvae can survive in these areas. Eliminate these areas and you'll be on your way to mosquito-free backyard!

Other things you can do to prevent mosquitoes setting up home in your yard are:
  • Cover rainwater tanks, septic tank openings, wells or other large water containers with mosquito-proof mesh
  • maintain roof gutters and remove leaves and debris so that pools of water do not form

  • keep edges of dams clear of vegetation
  • empty and refill bird baths, stock troughs and pets’ drinking water containers at least once a week
  • maintain and disinfect swimming pools
  • empty wading pools at the end of each day
  • ornamental ponds, unused swimming pools or other water bodies should be either emptied or stocked with small Australian native fish to eat any mosquito larvae ('wrigglers').

Tips to repel mosquitoes.

Plant mosquito-repelling plants such as garlic, lemongrass, lemon thyme, lavender, petunias, tansy, venus flytraps (or pitcher plants), and citronella. Avoid plants that are known to attract mosquitoes such as bamboo, taro, papyrus, water lilies, water hyacinths, and water lettuce.

Tips to get rid of mosquitoes.

Believe it or not, you can actually get rid of mosquitoes in your home and garden.
MD Pest Control offers a specialised Mosquito treatment package that includes a General Pest Spray, inside & outside your home, a specialised mosquito-targeted product that is commonly used to destroy mosquito nests, topical foliage spray (won't harm your plants/kids/pets), and a larvae tablet treatment of ponds, tanks, or dams. What you need to know about Spider control during la Nina

10/4/2022

There's been a lot of talk lately in Australia about how the la Nina weather phenomenon, so it's normal to wonder if it is going to affect the spiders that live in this country. People are worried that spiders are going to flourish under the weather conditions and we're going to have a significant increase in the amount of spiders that live here. This blog is going to look at how la Nina affects spiders and what you can do if you do notice more spiders in your home.

How is it that la Nina effects spiders?

La Nina has been causing many problems for us here in Adelaide. One of the most noticeable changes is how it affects spiders. The milder weather is causing them to move to different regions and they are showing up in places they are not usually seen.

Some spiders are more active during la Nina, while others are less active. Seems like we can't win either way!

The spiders that la Nina makes more active will be seen crawling up walls and across ceilings. The spiders will also be seen spinning webs in the corners of windows, doors, and other areas. (Situation normal, right?) Here in Adelaide, la Nina means a milder, wetter Summer. That can make spiders more active, through milder temperatures and more prey; and more likely to seek shelter from the rain.  So while Summer is traditionally a busy spider season here in Adelaide, seems that we can expect more!

La Nina can be good for the spiders. More food, more water, and warmer weather means more spiders.

How does la Nina effect spider control?

La Nina is a natural phenomenon that occurs every few years and is a result of the cooling of the oceans in the pacific. La Nina is known to have a variety of effects on the weather, but how does La Nina affect spider control? It is believed that the increased rainfall and humidity in La Nina years will lead to increased spider populations and spider infestations throughout the country. La Nina is also known to increase the longevity of spiders, meaning that they will survive longer during a La Nina year. How spiders are affected by La Nina is not yet know, but it is important to keep the long range impact on spiders in mind during this recurring weather pattern.

La Nina typically lasts from December to April. During this time, spider control should be increased. That said, wetter weather can mean that spray doesn't have time to be as effective or can delay treatment.

What can you do about spider control during la Nina?

La Nina is a weather pattern that brings increased rain and milder temperatures to Adelaide. This often leads to more spiders in homes as well. This means that spiders will be more active and itchy. To keep them away, you can try a few things. You can move your furniture away from the walls, vacuum the corners and under the furniture, and throw out any clutter that allows spiders to hide. The best way to get rid of spiders during la Nina is to vacuum, sweep, and mop your house. This will remove any webs or eggs. A spider is only going to move in if it gets a place to hide quickly. With a tidy and clean home, it can’t do this.

The other thing you can do is ensure that there isn't a build up of leaf litter, sticks, or other items against your house. These places provide shelter for spiders. Please make sure you wear long sleeves and gloves when working in the yard, you never know what spiders are lurking in your yard.

How to get rid of spiders during la Nina.

The most important thing to remember is booking in your regular pest spray. MD Pest control will reschedule your booking if the weather is unsuitable to spray. We pride ourselves on the quality of our work AND our customer service.
Make sure that you do not clean away webs before or after the general spray, MD Pest control will spray the webs so that any spiders returning “home” will be treated by the spray residue on their web.

Consider having a treatment done inside, especially to garages to help reduce spider numbers.

Remember to keep your home and garden tidy to reduce the number of places spiders can spin webs.

With the weather getting warmer, it is only a matter of time before the spiders come out. It is important to keep in mind that the spider population can increase during la Nina seasons. We hope that this blog has helped you gain interest in our services, so please contact us to book a pest spray and control.
