Shoo fly, don't bother me!

Flies! Most of us have a first thought about flies inside our house that would have us being accused of trash talk. Generally, we see flies where we have rubbish or left-over food; a regular occurrence in the Christmas/New Year period.

Flies can be a real pest. Noisy, bothersome, sticky! And if they start to breed inside your house, you can find yourself surrounded very quickly

Fly Infestations

While two is company & three (when it comes to flies) can be a crowd; having a few flies buzzing around may not be a big problem, but it certainly needs to be acted upon.

With our urban sprawl you might find that those flies hanging around outside are a symptom of something more sinister… dead rodents in the yard, or worse, in the walls of your house.

Most of us know that flies carry disease. With them hopping from one spot to another, including your food, this can mean that diseases can be easily spread throughout your home and to your food.

Left uncontrolled, a small group of annoying flies can become a serious problem! Some fly species mature from eggs to adults in just seven days.

How to Keep Flies Away

Common Signs You Have a Fly Problem

  • Groups of little black spots - Look in light fittings & tops of walls that are out of the way & out of the breeze. Check hard to clean, and sometimes smelly, areas such as channels, drains, waste traps and wall/floor cavities.
  • Regular sighting of flies - large number of flies can point to a more serious problem. Check where water may pool (like you would for mosquitoes). Waterlogged pot plants can also attract flies.
  • Maggots – can point to a breeding site and a chance to nip an infestation in the bud.
Below is a list of simple steps you can take to keep flies at bay. But the first step to keep the flies out of your home, as with many other pests like spiders and cockroaches, is to keep it clean and tidy.

  • Keep Out- fit flyscreens to windows to keep them outside of your home.
  • Tidy Up – tidying up any spills and putting food away after your done is good food hygiene in more ways than one.
  • Rubbish / Compost bins – make sure they are in good repair and seal properly.
  • Pets - clean up after them.
  • Clear Up Dead Flies - they can be a food source for other pests.
  • Drains - ensure drains are kept clean. Our Eco-Friendly Bio-Drain treatments eliminate breeding grounds in drains within your home.

Protecting your home from termites or white ants.

Did you know that Termites can travel up to 150 meters and migrate to other properties that are risk of termite infestations?
Termites cause over $170m worth of damage to Australian homes each year. Depending on the severity of the issue, termites can actually render a house unlivable if the problem becomes severe enough.
The key to lowering the cost of termite-related repairs is to conduct frequent termite inspections in order to detect problems early.

What are termites?

Termites, or white ants, are insects which devour wood and most cellulose containing materials like cardboard, paper, etc. There are various types of termites present in Adelaide. White ants vary in colour, shape, and size of termites depending upon the species. Despite their name white ants are more closely related to cockroaches than ants.

How big are termite colonies?

Termites are social insects and therefore live in colonies. Some, build above-ground termite mounds. Other species of termites prefer to build their mounds up in trees and telephone poles. More commonly, we see termites hiding in the walls and rooves of residences. White ant colonies can contain several million insects.

Do termites ever stop?

While there are times where you’re more likely to see white ants, termites are active 24/7 – 365 days per year.

Are termites and white ants the same thing?

White ant is the common name for termites. While termite is the correct term, they are often called white ants due to their appearance. They resemble ants and are white in colour.

What do termites like to eat?

Termites devour the cellulose that is found in paper and timber-based products. The timber is often eaten from the inside, leaving a paper-thin shell on the outside that appears mottled or wrinkled and often stained with spots of mud. On residential properties, termites often infest finished timbers such as door frames, skirting boards and architraves, subfloor timbers and framing.

How we help you with your termite problem?

Prevention is always better than the cure, that’s why we recommend an annual termite inspection at the very minimum. If you know of active white ants in your area, then we recommend installing a termite baiting system.
A termite inspection will also help you to understand how to reduce the risk of termites invading your home by pointing out weaknesses in your home or areas of the garden needing clearing.
